Our Moose Rewilding Project
Our Moose Rewilding Project
At Northern Lights Wildlife Society (NLWS), we are dedicated to the critical and ongoing mission of rewilding moose, a key species within our ecosystem. Over the next few weeks, we will delve deep into our moose rewilding project, sharing compelling stories and fascinating facts about the moose we have had the privilege to care for.
The Inspiring Beginnings
Our journey began with a poignant story that unfolded in the spring of 1986. Our founders, Peter and Angelika, were moved by an article in the local newspaper detailing the tragic fate of two moose calves whose mother had tragically died in a train collision. Unfortunately, at that time, there were no facilities equipped to care for these vulnerable calves, leading to their untimely euthanasia. This heart-wrenching event sparked a resolve in Peter and Angelika to establish a refuge capable of rescuing and rehabilitating such distressed wildlife. It took four years of dedicated effort and navigating bureaucratic challenges before we received our first permit to operate as a wildlife shelter.
The First Success and Ongoing Challenges
In 1992, our commitment bore fruit as we welcomed our first moose calf, Katja. Her arrival marked a significant milestone and set the stage for what would become one of our most challenging yet rewarding endeavors. Caring for moose calves, with their specific dietary and spatial needs, presents unique challenges that our team has continuously worked to overcome. Over the years, our expertise and facilities have evolved, enabling us to provide better care and a higher chance of successful rewilding for these majestic creatures.
Continuing Our Mission
Today, our moose rewilding project remains a cornerstone of our efforts at NLWS. Each moose that passes through our doors is treated with the utmost care, from emergency rescues to the final, joyful day of release back into their natural habitat. Through our blog, we invite you to join us on this journey, offering you a window into the daily triumphs and trials involved in moose conservation. Stay tuned for more stories and insights that highlight the impact of your support and the vital work we do.
By sharing these stories, we not only raise awareness about the plight of moose but also celebrate the progress we've made thanks to the support of our community. Together, we continue to strive towards a future where every moose calf has the opportunity to roam freely and safely in the wild.
